Welcome to The 5 Bees Farm

Welcome to our homesteading blog! We are thrilled to have you here and share our journey of living a more sustainable and self-sufficient lifestyle.

We purchased our historic farm in 2020 with the intention of having a hobby farm. Many homesteaders can relate to the sentiment that chickens were the first stepping stone, opening the path leading to more of a homestead lifestyle. Homesteading is a way of life that has been around for centuries. In recent years, it has gained popularity as people strive to live more intentionally and reduce their carbon footprint.

For us, homesteading is a way to connect with nature, live a simpler life, and provide for ourselves and our family. We believe that homesteading is not only good for the environment, but also good for our health, general wellbeing and for our farm. When we produce our own food and know exactly what goes into it, we naturally become more appreciative of our resources, more aware of our surroundings, and better stewards of our homestead.

Beginnings

We have always enjoyed the outdoors, working with our hands, and have a penchant for growing things. In fact, we enjoyed container gardening and experimenting with subirrigation planters for several years while living in a row home in downtown Baltimore. After raising chickens for eggs, we started raising ducks for eggs and also decided to take the plunge and pursue our dream of beekeeping. As with most things in life, the greatest challenge is deciding to take the first step. We are humbled every day by how much there is to learn and how, despite our care, knowledge or experience, the ultimate course of things is often determined by factors outside of our control. Such is the way of things on the farm.

New Horizons

We quickly realized how disconnected we were from our food. In terms of quality and experience, the produce and food that is lovingly produced by our homestead exists in a different league than that found at a grocery store. There is simply no comparison to watching seeds grow into plants and harvesting our own food. Our small vegetable garden and tumbler composter quickly gave way to a larger garden as well as a compost pile that requires turning with a tractor. We have also started preserving our own food through canning, freezing, utilizing our root cellar, and water-glassing eggs. We are adding pasture raised meat birds to the farm this spring, and look forward to bringing Scottish Highland cattle back to the farm!
